5 Favorite Local Food Resources

We’re nearing the end of the annual Buy Local Challenge in Maryland, so I thought I’d share a few of my favorite local Eastern Shore resources. There are many great local food resources in Kent County, and on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. THese are a few that I frequent:

1. Colchester Farm

I’m a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) member, so I get to pick up a small share (5 items) each week. Total cost is roughly $14/week for 26 weeks, June-November.

Colchester also sets up a market stand at the Chestertown Farmers’ Market and The Kent Island Market. This year, I joined the board of directors and serve as secretary.

2. Crow Farm

When I moved away from a vegetarian lifestyle, the first meat I ate was from Crow Farm. Judy Crow reached out to me and asked me to come check out her farm. Inspired by the great practices, the happy cows, and the satisfaction of knowing where my food originated, I left the farm with a couple of packs of steak, ready to re-introduce meat into my life. I haven’t looked back since, and Crow Farm remains my top local meat resource of choice.

3. Lockbriar Farms

This is my best source of local fruits in the summer, and many of my vegetables year-round. I love, love, love going here for U-Pick strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and more. The staff are always so friendly, the produce is awesome, and it’s less than 5 minutes from my house. All-around win! They also set-up at the Chestertown Farmers’ Market. U-Pick hours can be found on their website or facebook page.

4. White Marsh Orchard

This is my local go-to for peaches, nectarines, and plums. It’s just a short 20 minute drive from my house, and the rows of deliciousness are endless. They set up at the Chestertown Farmers’ Market but I much prefer to visit and pick items myself.

5. Milburn Orchard

This one is a little farther from my house (about 45 minutes), but is a wonderful destination for fall apple and pumpkin picking! I try to go at least twice. I love the short wagon ride to the apple orchard, and there’s always a family-fun atmosphere. A great way to spend a fall weekend day!
